Matte vs. Shine lips – Which do you prefer?

Essence Matt Matt Matt Longlasting LipglossesWhen it comes to Matte vs. Shine lip looks, I have to admit that I tend to go for matte. Purely because of the convenience. I have very long hair and can’t stand it when it all blows in my face and sticks to my lips because I’m wearing lipgloss. I think because of this, I had sort of given up wearing shiny lip products. But then I came across some absolutely stunning makeup looks that had a glossy lip and thought I would give it a go again…

Essence have a huge collection of both shine and matte lip products. So using a few shades from their range, I have put to the test some of the Wet Look lip glosses and Matte lipsticks, to see which I prefer. I’m actually a huge fan of all their products, mainly because they smell so good! The Shine Shine Shine Wet Look Lipglosses* have a really sweet scent, and the Matt Matt Matt Longlasting Lipglosses* smell like cupcake mix or icing – I can’t really work out which but they do smell great!

I was left pleasantly surprised by the Matt Matt Matt Longlasting lipglosses. I think matt finish lip products you sort of expect to be quite drying on the lips, but that was not the case at all with these. They have such a creamy formula, which is really easy to apply with the doe-foot shaped applicator (another bonus of the Essence lip products). I’m just so impressed with how hydrating they actually feel when applied.

The only thing I have to say about the Matt Matt Matt lipglosses is that they don’t dry out, so you do get a fair bit of transfer when drinking for example. This means they require a top up every so often. But I do love the finish and formula so I don’t mind so much about the drying out.

Essence Shine Shine Shine Wetlook Lipglosses

I’ve used some of their wet look lip glosses before in my festival makeup look, which I actually did really like as I found them to not be sticky. They have a non-stick formula this gives a super high shine finish to the lips. It actually looks really lovely used in the daytime as I found the two shades I received to be very opaque. The same with the Sheer & Shine lipstick*, it has a great finish but was slightly more balmy in terms of the colour.

Both the Matt Matt Matt Lipstick* and Sheer & Shine Lipstick are both quite sheer in appearance. So I would definitely recommend these more for people that are looking for a balmy product that isn’t rich in colour. These are much better for providing a sheer wash of colour as they aren’t very pigmented.

The lipsticks and Shine Shine Shine Lipglosses are priced at £2.00 each and the Matt Matt Matt Lipglosses are £2.30 at Wilko, so I really can’t complain about the pigmentation or longevity of them. As with all Essence products, I think they are such good value. But overall, I have to admit that I am still more of a matt kinda girl. I just prefer the finish of matt lip products and these matt lipglosses have really impressed me.

Which do you prefer? Matt or Shine lips?
