When you start to get bored of a room’s interior, there are so many affordable ways you can add some life back into it without breaking the bank. One of which is by jazzing up your shelves. Let’s face it, they can become a bit boring after a while if they are just left messily with books stacked all over the place (well in my case anyway…). So with a few affordable pieces, you can make your shelves look like more of a feature piece in a room while on a budget. Plus at the end of the post, you will have the chance to win yourself a gorgeous Lightbox!
Get a Lightbox
I absolutely love these but think I must be one of the last blogger’s on the planet to get my hands on one. I love that you can make them so personalised with the messages. This lovely Vintage Grey Wooden Lightbox* is from Gingersnap and it comes with 85 black letters and symbols, so you can literally fill it with whatever message you want! You can also get additional Lightbox Letters* that are filled with symbols and coloured letters. The pastel ones are so cute as they are filled with lots of cute emoji’s, which add a bit of colour to the black text letters. My favourite is definitely the little pineapples!
I think that lightboxes make a great addition to any set of shelves because they add a bit of personality to them through the message you choose to display. It’s one of those cute things you can change when you have people coming over, or have a birthday. With the light that it projects it also makes a really nice feature alongside your books without being too much of a stand-out feature. The grey wood of this Gingersnap Lightbox makes it a lovely piece with a ‘shabby chic’ style to it.

Show Some Memories
If you have any photos lying around, make the most of them! Get them into some really pretty frames and have them displayed on your shelves. In a day and age where literally everything is now digital, I hardly ever see photos getting printed and displayed anymore – which I think is such a shame! Plus there are so many gorgeous photo frames out there, that you can definitely find a statement one to display on your bookshelf.
Styling Your Books
You don’t have to have your books presented in the usual way, e.g. side by side. Instead, you can get creative and have them stacked or side by side with some stacked on top. Just use the space your shelf has to offer to make the books look as interesting as possible. This is a really good tip for those working on a budget as essentially it is free to do as well!
I’ve tried going with the half and half way of displaying them, so I can have the books on half of the shelf and then an ornament or something on the other side. I think this looks like quite a neat way of displaying books in my opinion as it means they don’t take over the shelves!
Such a simple way to add some colour to your shelves is by getting a plant. You can get some really beautiful plant pots to display them in, but I think even a simple metal tin works well. I love those plants that delicately drape off the shelves as they grow. But if that isn’t really your thing, you could even just get some fake flowers to display. I know that Wilko has a good range of realistic looking artificial flowers.
Get Creative with Crockery
I’ve got this absolutely gorgeous mug from Oliver Bonas, but it is just too big to drink from. It is more like a bowl! The print on the outside is so gorgeous so I like to use it as a feature on my bookshelf. A mug might seem like such a random thing to have on a shelf, but it actually works really well at keeping your shelf tidy. You can pop all those little bits like hairclips, keys and coins in there to keep the shelf looking pristine! Or, something like this would also work really well as a cute plant pot for a small plant.
