I used to find workwear so difficult. I found it hard to find clothes that were smart enough but didn’t look really basic. There is such a struggle with workwear that makes you just think your wardrobe has to be a complete bore. But I have found a few key pieces you add to your workwear wardrobe to get your looks spot on. These are the absolute essentials you need to get your workwear wardrobe started.
Ok, so first things first, you absolutely, most definitely, need a good blouse in your workwear wardrobe. And by that, I do not mean one of those boring fitted shirts. You want one you feel comfortable wearing, and that is versatile enough to be worn with trousers, skirts, blazers and so on.
For my workwear wardrobe, I have found the most perfect workwear blouse from 405 Story. Not only is the Liz blouse* the most comfortable blouse ever, it is also super flattering, making it an absolute winner. The fabric is really soft (like really soft) and just flows nicely with any outfit, which means it is a great blouse for tucking into things or wearing tucked out. You don’t get that awkward puffiness like you do with some other shirts or blouses when you tuck them in. The fabric of this blouse just hangs really well when you do tuck it in. I just know that this blouse will be great for those days when the weather is really hot, but you’re still stuck in workwear. As it is such a loose fit style, it will be a really nice and breezy option!
Having a really statement piece in your workwear wardrobe is a must. It could be anything from a printed pair of trousers or cool shoes, but for me I like the statement piece to be the blazer or jacket. I find it works as a piece that can be more versatile as it gives you more outfit options!
Go for something that has a really cool print, but that has muted colours that make it easy to match with classic workwear colours, like black and navy. This jacket from Only has hints of navy and red, so I find it easy to match the colours to my shoes for example. I’ve also had my eye on this gorgeous printed jacket from Glamorous, as it just looks so good for summer!
You cannot go wrong with a good pair of fitted trousers. I found my perfect pair in Gap. The Slim City Cropped Trousers are absolutely incredible. They have a good amount of stretch and sit at a really nice height on my ankle. The slightly cropped length makes them a little more on-trend, and also perfect for all year round. Honestly, with these trousers, I have been able to create so many different workwear outfits, and don’t think I would have been able to survive without them!
When you have a pair of cropped trousers, there is nothing better than pairing them with a good pair of loafers. I like the contrast of having a nice fitted pair of trousers with a slightly chunky shoe. The pair I have been absolutely loving is the block heel tassle loafers from M&S – would you believe?! I picked up the burgundy pair to go for something a little different from the standard black I normally go for. The burgundy breaks up any outfit a bit more by adding just a slight hint of colour.
Finding the perfect workwear bag can be an almost impossible task – but I am here to tell you, it is possible! As my work bag is something I use on a regular basis, I invested in a slightly pricier one that I knew would last me a long time. So I went for the DKNY Saffiano, which works amazingly as a work bag because it fits my Macbook in! And everyone knows, finding a nice handbag that fits your laptop in is an absolute miracle. It is such a great bag, so if you are planning on investing, I would definitely check out the DKNY bags as I find this one really sturdy. Alternatively, ASOS has some great options, so I have picked out a few of my faves below.
Once you have your workwear wardrobe sorted, next up is makeup! And I’ve got you sorted with a work-ready makeup look in less than 10 minutes…
