Going away can be the perfect opportunity to rejuvenate, refocus your mind, and come home feeling like a brand new version of yourself. However, one of the most difficult things can be to stay in the moment while you’re away. Staying in the moment is tough when you lead a busy life back home, and you may often find yourself thinking about work or all the things you need to do when you return.
If that sounds like you, this guide can help you. Here, we’ll take a look at how you can stay in the moment the next time you’re away.
Stay Away From Social Media and Emails
Start by promising yourself that you’ll stay away from social media and emails. It can be tempting to keep an eye on things when you’re not there just to be ‘safe’, but this will definitely take you out of the moment and stop you from enjoying yourself. Have an automatic message go out to those who email you, and delete the apps from your phone while you’re away. You don’t need to know what anybody else is doing and they don’t need to know what you’re doing.
Make Sure Everybody Knows You’re Away
Make sure everybody is on the same page. Let people at work know you’re going to be unreachable and give them instructions for if they get stuck. Let family members know, too. You don’t need to be available all the time - at least you’re letting everybody know in advance. Consider this an exercise in setting boundaries. If you feel like you need to be available for everybody all the time then this is a clue that you might not have the solid boundaries you think you do.
Practice Bringing Yourself Back to the Present Moment
Your mind can easily wander off when you feel like you’ve got lots to think about, but you can practice staying focused by bringing yourself back to the present moment. If you notice your mind wandering when you’re supposed to be enjoying a once in a lifetime experience, gently bring yourself back to the moment and start noticing things about your surroundings.
Immerse Yourself in Your Itinerary
Creating an itinerary using a travel guide can help you to immerse yourself in your trip. Find places to drop your bags off so you’re not worrying about them and just go and see what the place you’re visiting has to offer. You don’t want to fill your itinerary up too much, as you may get even more stressed out trying to complete everything you’ve set out for yourself. However, having a few things that you really want to do lined up can help you to get excited.
Reduce Self Consciousness
Just let yourself be in the moment and try not to think too much about what others think of you or how you look. This can be extremely difficult, as we are taught to think of these things from a young age. However, when you train yourself to do this you’ll have a much better time.
